Abdominoplasty for Men

Lost a lot of weight or getting back in shape and noticing some extra skin around your abs? Or maybe your abs just don’t seem as tight. If this is you, a tummy tuck might help you get the flat abs you’re looking for. A tummy tuck works by tightening up and flattening the abdominal muscles. After the muscles are tightened, the skin around the abdomen can often times seem looser. To correct this, the skin is pulled tight and the excess is trimmed away. This allows the creation of a flat abdomen with smooth skin.

Who is a good candidate for abdominoplasty?

The best candidates are non smokers who are in overall good general health.  We all have fat that lines our abdominal organs and also lies between our skin and abdominal muscles. In men, fat amongst the abdominal organs is very common and tends to push the muscles out and make the abdomen bulge. The problem with this kind of fat is that it cannot be addressed surgically, but only with diet and exercise. After this goes down with diet and exercise, the remainder of the abdomen can be treated with a tummy tuck.

How long does it take to recover from abdominoplasty?

It may take a few weeks or a few months to completely return to your normal activities, depending on the extent of your surgery. However, if you are in good physical condition and have strong abdominal muscles, recovering from a tummy tuck can be much quicker. While many patients are not able to return to physical work for about three weeks, some find they are able to return to non physical work around two weeks.

Typically, it takes about five to seven days to start driving comfortably again. Even if you are just getting up and walking around the house, exercise in some form is very important to your recovery. Not only will it help you heal better; it can reduce swelling, tone your muscles, and lower the chance of blood clots. Vigorous exercise should typically be avoided for four weeks, unless given the go ahead and cleared by Dr. Pancholi.

Your scars may appear dark over the first three to six months of the healing process. This is normal. Expect it to take about nine months to a year for your scars to smooth out and lighten. They will never disappear completely; however, abdominoplasty scars will be in a discreet location (under the pubic line), so they are easily hidden by clothing or swim suits.

Liposuction for Abdominal Contouring

If you are noticing that your abs are flat and you don’t have loose skin but excess fat between your abs and skin, tumescent or VASER liposuction might be the answer for you. Liposuction can also be used to enhance the results of abdominoplasty and sculpt a more attractive line to your physique. Dr. Pancholi will discuss your options for liposuction during your consultation.
