Facial Rejuvenation for Men

Men are beginning to acknowledge what many women have known for years — wrinkles and sagging skin make them appear older and more tired than they feel. Cosmetic surgery to smooth and restore youthfulness to the face, eyelid and brow areas can make a tremendous difference in how confident you feel as well as how others perceive you.

Male Facelift

One of the more popular surgeries for men is the facelift. Often times, the lower face and the neck are areas that bother men the most. A facelift or a neck lift can correct the “turkey wattle” that develops as a result of sagging neck skin and muscles. A nicely contoured neck can restore a strong masculine jaw line and make a striking change towards looking younger and fit.

Hair growth and beard growth may play a major role in the outcome of a facelift. If you are balding or have thinning hair, surgical artistry may be required to hide the facelift incision, especially in the temple area.

A fatty or “jowly” area around the chin is also a concern for many men. In younger patients, liposuction alone may be sufficient to correct the problem. Older patients may require a full facelift and necklift, which may include the removal of excess skin and tightening the area muscles, on each side of the neck.

Expect some swelling and bruising initially. This will usually resolve over a week.  You will wear an elastic strap around your neck which will help the tissues head and minimize swelling.  You can return to minor physical activity in a couple weeks and full activity in about a month.

Forehead Lift (Browlift)

The eyes are an important feature, and many men are concerned that gradual changes around the eyes can have a negative effect on their appearance. Sagging eyebrows from aging or heredity can cause a person to look angry, sad, or tired. A forehead lift, or brow lift, can raise the forehead and brow, reduce prominent horizontal forehead creases and vertical frown lines for a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

Multiple techniques are available. For men with a receding hairline, the procedure can be performed to lift the brow and move the hairline forward at the same time. This will allow for a shorter hairline. For others, the procedure can be done through five small incision using a minimally invasive endoscopic approach. Minor bruising and swelling will subside in about a week, and you can likely plan on a return to full physical activity in about 3 weeks.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Both upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, are popular with many men, who realize the importance of eye contact in business and social situations. Blepharoplasty can often correct a “sad” or “tired” appearance by removing the bulging fat (“bags”) and excessive and wrinkled skin of the eyelids. Dissolving stitches are used most often and do not need to be removed. There may be swelling and bruising that typically resolves in 1-2 weeks.

As a diplomate of both the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and American Osteopathic Board of Otolaryngology – Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Pancholi understands the complexity of the male eyelid, which is  naturally heavier than a womans, and adjusts his technique to maintain a natural masculine appearance. Blepharoplasty is often combined with a facelift or other facial procedures for a more dramatic effect.
