Is the Key to Youthful Skin in Your Own Blood? 3 Reasons to Consider PRP Therapy
Last year, we added a remarkable treatment to our menu of non-surgical services—and we’re excited to offer patients a natural way to restore glowing, youthful skin: platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP).
Despite its growing popularity, many are still wondering, “what exactly is PRP…and can it really help me look younger?” Luckily, we’re here to give you all the details on how PRP works to revitalize your skin
First, what is platelet rich plasma therapy?
PRP therapy is a natural treatment where a sample of your blood is separated into different components. The component used in this treatment is the plasma portion that is concentrated with platelets—platelet rich plasma.
This platelet rich plasma is then administered to the skin. There are different methods including injecting the PRP under the skin, using a microneedling device to propel the PRP into the skin, and using a microneedling device followed with placement of the PRP onto the skin so it will soak into the new temporary skin openings.
Now that you know the basics, here are a few things you should know about the treatment (and why we think you’ll ❤ PRP, too!).
1. Platelets call on the body’s natural regenerative properties
Your blood contains a number of components that all play different roles. Platelets have the important job of helping clot your blood and supporting your body’s healing process, as they signal various cells to their location. When PRP is placed into, around, or under the skin, it calls various growth factors to the area. These growth factors can help to improve blood supply and collagen and tissue growth, and they do it in a way that is more directed and stronger than if growth factors were not present. Think of it was a way of focusing your body’s resources to help improve healing as well as improve the condition and appearance of the area where it is placed.
What does that mean for you? PRP is actually improving your skin by promoting natural collagen production and tissue regeneration (while helping you look younger, to boot).
2. It’s totally natural
All of the professional skin treatments, products, and injectables we use have excellent safety profiles—and Dr. Pancholi always thoroughly vets new options to ensure they deliver when it comes to results. That being said, a huge benefit of PRP therapy for many patients is that it is entirely natural and of your own body.
Did you know that PRP has been used for many years both cosmetically and medically? While its use for skin rejuvenation has become popular more recently, PRP has been used in orthopedics for joint pain relief and healing for a few decades.
Because the product being injected or applied to your skin is natural, the risk of an adverse reaction or your body “rejecting” the product is low. It also means it is a safe option for all skin types and comes with very few side effects.
3. It’s a great option for a variety of concerns
When used alone or combined with other treatments, PRP therapy can improve a number of skin concerns.
- Aging: by enhancing collagen production, PRP therapy can soften the appearance of fine lines, lighten dark spots or sun damage, and give your skin a more supple appearance.
- Scarring: Microneedling with PRP can reduce the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks.
- Hair loss: PRP has been shown to promote new hair growth in those experiencing the beginning stages of alopecia.
PRP therapy is also a wonderful option for improving the overall health and appearance of your skin. Our patients report that their skin feels more hydrated and firm, on top of looking a little more radiant—and we’ve seen beautiful results in patients of all ages.
