Quality Sleep Can Enhance Eye Procedures, Expert Says

how to look less tired If you’ve had eyelid surgery, getting more rest may enhance your results, according to a sleep expert.

Sleep specialist Michael Breus, PhD, says that eye procedures, such as blepharoplasty and tear trough injections, are more effective when paired with quality sleep.

He says that cosmetic surgeons can help meet or exceed their patients’ expectations for a procedure by checking if they are sleep deprived and identifying barriers to good-quality sleep.

Puffiness & Dark Circles

Two of the biggest culprits that make us look tired? Under-eye puffiness and dark circles.

“Eye puffiness is a factor of under-eye fat, and it is genetic,” Breus says.

Dark circles are common on the eyes because the skin there is very thin. “When you are sleep-deprived, blood pools under your eyes where your skin is thinnest, creating dark circles,” Breus says.

Breus says that cosmetic surgery and good sleep go hand in hand in helping patients look less tired.

Eye Procedures

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is one of the most popular procedures for the eye area. The operation can correct drooping eyelids as well as bags and bulges around the eyes.

Injectables, such as Botox, that smooth crow’s feet are also popular for refreshing the eye area.

For those with hollow tear troughs—crescent shaped depressions under the lower eyelids—an injectable like Juvederm can restore volume.

Beauty Sleep

Breus also claims that sleep will improve your overall complexion. “Skin will go from ashen and pale to rosy and healthy because more sleep will boost circulation and reduce inflammation,” he says.

Wendy Lewis, founder of Beautyinthebag.com, agrees that sleep habits have more of an impact on our appearance than we realize.

“Sleep deprivation causes dehydration and inflammation, and contributes to slack skin and sluggish cells,” she says. “The body is unable to operate optimally, which takes its toll on your face and tends to make you look older than your chronological age.”
