When an implant is surgically placed, the body will naturally seal it off from the rest of the body with scar tissue. The breast implant is 100% sealed off from the body. The scar tissue that seals off the implant is known as a “capsule”. The capsule’s existence is rarely noticed by the patient. At times, the body may decide to “reject” the implant. In the process, the capsule that was previously unnoticed begins to tighten around the implant. As it tightens, the soft implant starts to become firm.
Often times the implant will start to move upward on the chest wall. If this happens to you it can often be corrected with revision surgery. There are many thoughts on the cause of capsular contracture and also the treatment for this. Depending on what type of implant you have and how it was placed plays a role. The type of corrective surgery and its sophistication will depend on these and other factors.
