The latest study about the health benefits of breastfeeding suggests that it may play a role in reducing waist circumference and risk of heart disease. Findings were presented last week during the American Heart Association conference on cardiovascular health.

Data collected from 351 women at an average age of 51 revealed that those “who consistently breast-fed their children had waist circumferences that were an average of 2.6 inches smaller than women who had never breast-fed.”

The correlation doesn’t necessarily mean that breastfeeding is the sole factor that makes a woman healthier and slimmer in the waist; As Dr. Nieca Goldberg suggests, these women may have also practiced healthier lifestyles.

You can read more about this study at womenshealth.gov

Botox could be used as a migraine headache treatment, according to new research published in the medical journal Archives of Dermatology. Authors of the new study say Botox injections “at doses appropriate for cosmetic purposes may be sufficient to prevent migraine attacks.”

According to writers on Bloomberg news, pharmaceutical company and Botox manufacturer Allergan applied for FDA clearance to market Botox as a headache treatment. However, researchers say they cannot fully explain how Botox works to relieve headaches. One co-author of the study, Rami Burstein says, “it may block the signals in sensory nerves located on the outside of the head.”

This week, we’re featuring a guest blog post by Michelle in Denver, Colorado. She had breast augmentation years ago from another surgeon and is now considering a revision procedure. This article includes her research and discussion on the topic.

Do breast implants need to be replaced periodically?

Breast implants do not have an expiration date and there is no requirement to have them replaced every ten years or so. The FDA and the Institute of Medicine have data on average implant longevity rates, but there really is no definitive recommendation. Speaking for myself, I am at 25 years and counting. My breast implants have far outlasted my marriage!

According to an article by the FDA, “breast implants do not last forever. If you decide to get breast implants, you will likely need additional surgeries on your breasts over your lifetime due to rupture, other complications or unacceptable cosmetic outcomes. Also, according to The National Research Center for Women & Families, “the likelihood of rupture increases every year.”

But as long as the breast implant is intact and you are not experiencing any complications, there is no real need to have a breast implant revision.

After 25 years, I am not experiencing any major complications or significant positioning problems, even after two pregnancies and breastfeeding, however I am considering breast implant replacement. I want to be proactive and avoid any complications, but I also want to benefit from new technology and use this opportunity to achieve a new look.

What is Breast Implant Revision?

Breast implant revision involves the removal or replacement of your current breast implants. Cosmetic surgeons recommend regular evaluation during the years that follow breast augmentation. Evidence shows that somewhere between 10 and 20 years after surgery, many women will either be experiencing some type of complication or will desire an improved breast appearance. Over time, positioning changes may occur due to accidents or natural causes. Breast implant revision surgery is intended to resolve these concerns.

Some of the common reasons one might consider a breast implant revision surgery are as follows:

Encapsulation, i.e. capsular contracture, which consists of excessive scar tissue development that can place pressure on the implant

Implant wrinkling

Improper implant positioning

Implant rupture or leakage

Desire to improve breast appearance

Desire to use improved implant technology

Aging and potential weakening of the breast implants

With breast implant revision, the patient has a chance to alter breast shape and size; after all, it is a whole new decade and your lifestyle is quite likely different than when you originally chose to get breast implants.

I’m a single woman, 79 years old, with a grown son, and a wonderful daughter-in-law and granddaughter. I’m happy to tell you about my experience with Dr. Pancholi and his great staff. I met them 10 months ago, to get fillers – Botox and Juvederm – because my face was looking old and I wanted it to look younger. You know, fighting old age makes me feel good. I wanted the ‘outside’ to feel like the ‘in’ – young!

I live in Las Vegas with my son (the doctor) my daughter-in-law and my granddaughter. I have a busy life. We like to eat out and I play the nickel machines. I go to church and I belong to 24 Hour Fitness – just love it – and I’m going to school now with my granddaughter. We signed up for a jewelry making course, and I thought we’d be stringing beads but it turns out I’m sawing metal! [laughter] I have three good friends that go with me everywhere and we talk all the time: they are me, myself, and I.

I lived in the Mid-West, where I was a cosmetologist and I raised my son there. I always worked hard, but I didn’t mind it; I liked it. I thought I might marry again, but it didn’t work out, even though I’m lovable. Everybody loves me because I’m a nice person to be around. After being in Vegas, I knew I’d be heading back to Omaha to visit everyone again, so that’s when I decided to get the fillers. I wanted him to look at me and see what he missed out on. I saw him and he told me that Las Vegas has been good to me because I looked so fine – loved it! [laughter]

Before I called Dr. Pancholi, I looked around. I went on the computer, talked to a woman I met who had gotten Botox and Juvederm and looked great, and I went to another doctor first. His nurse showed me Before & After photos and she told me how the doctor would fill me here [pointing to her face] and lift me there and I would look great. I made the appointment and the doctor told me his nurse was wrong and that I wouldn’t look like those photos at all. And he didn’t want to give me injectable fillers.

When I went to Dr. Pancholi, he really listened to me and he asked me, “What do you want to look like?” He had a confidence about him, came across as being truthful. As I always told my son, you can put on the charm but you can’t fake character. Dr. Pancholi has charm and character, and he came across as being honest. I could tell he cared about me and what I wanted, not about money, but about my outcome.

As a cosmetologist, I worked on hair all my career life. I used to watch the women come into my salon and I would look at their faces. Some faces were square, some were elongated and some women had high foreheads. I looked at their faces as the picture and their hair as the frame. You don’t want the frame to take away from the picture. The frame makes the picture look good. Well, this is just like Dr. Pancholi; he is an artist about the face. He told me to watch as he put the Juvederm in one side of my face and told me I’d see an instant difference from that side of my face to the other. I did! He looked at my face and took time; he didn’t just quickly inject here, inject there. He worked around my eyes, my lips and on the parts of my face that needed filling out. He took his time and moved around my face until the picture was complete and beautiful!

They took all the time in the world with me…

It’s a great office and a great staff; they made me feel very comfortable and took all the time in the world with me. Dr. Pancholi’s so personable, and never rushes when he’s seeing you. That’s important to me. And he tells you the truth – doesn’t over promise. In about a day and a half, the swelling went down and even though my family wasn’t sure beforehand that I should do it, everyone told me how good I looked. I’ve always been willing to try things and I love makeup so I bought some Latisse while I was there, too. Now that stuff works great!

It makes you want to hold your head up high and put your shoulders back

I have arthritis in my hip, but I still stand up straight. Since I got it [the Botox and Juvederm] done, I walk tall and I don’t even think about my hip! I just feel better about myself. I wasn’t sure I looked so good at first. I guess I thought I’d look 25 years younger and of course I didn’t. But everyone was coming up to me and telling me how great I looked. People communicated this to me. I walk tall — I’m ready for the runway! So, then you take all that to heart – what everyone says about you – and of course I see the difference now when I look in the mirror and I’m very happy with the results. I feel young on the inside and always have; now I look as young on the outside as I feel on the ‘in’.

What I Would Tell Others My Age Who are Considering a Cosmetic Procedure

After Dr. Pancholi gave me the Botox and Juvederm, people tell me that Vegas agrees with me. I love that! I introduce myself to people now, I say: ‘I’m Ms. H” and I’m 79 years old.’ I do that on purpose so they will say – and they always do – ‘You are not! You look so young; you don’t look a day over 60!’ If I could offer advice to others my age who are thinking about having cosmetic surgery or Botox and or other fillers, I’d tell them, ‘Don’t be afraid. Go for it!’ I don’t know how many from my generation would think about doing this. But I get compliments all the time and it just makes you feel so good.

I had my first breast augmentation 20 years ago. I’m an active flight attendant in my 60’s and married with three grown children. I’m glad to have the opportunity to tell you my breast augmentation story – a story with a really happy ending! Three months ago, Dr. Pancholi removed 20-year-old breast implants and gave me a breast augmentation with saline implants. I had a breast augmentation originally because after three children my breasts were pretty much gone. I wanted to feel confident again about the way I looked and my husband told me to go for it, so I started planning. At the time, I owned several salons and I saved for three years before I could finally get that procedure done. That was then.

Now, even though I’m in my 60’s, I take a lot of pride in being physically fit and looking good. I walk, I belong to a health club here in Las Vegas and I work out 3 times a week. My flight attendant work is physical, too. I lift luggage, climb flights of stairs, and walk a lot in the airports. I also have an active social life with my son, my daughter-in-law and a cousin. We eat out and have regular get-togethers. I play bingo and like the nickel machines so that gets me out and about, too and I’m close to my neighbors. There’s always something going on, so I like to get dressed up and go out and I like to look my best.

I had to have my old implants replaced and I was scared, so I put it off.

About six years ago, I noticed that my implants were starting to harden. The right one was especially uncomfortable, and the breast was starting to point downward. You couldn’t tell when I was dressed, but I knew it and I realized I needed to do something about it. Last year, Dr. Pancholi did breast augmentation surgery on a friend of mine and she got a beautiful result. That got me thinking about it even more. The thing is… I was scared to go through a surgery and have anesthesia.

Now I’m only sorry I waited so long…

When you’re young, you’re not scared – at least I wasn’t. You just don’t really think about it. It was a different time in my life and I was sure of what I wanted. But I’m a lot older now and I wasn’t sure how I would do in surgery. I knew that I’d have to schedule time away from my work, which was also a concern…and I was worried about discomfort afterward. So, thinking about it became stressful for me. I knew I needed to have the old breast implants removed, but I kept putting it off. I finally decided to just take care of the situation so I could get back to my normal optimistic way of looking at life. Now I’m only sorry I waited so long.

I checked out several doctors, and asked about pricing and so forth. I decided to go with Dr. Pancholi because – like I said – my friend got a beautiful result and she couldn’t say enough about how Dr. Pancholi and his staff treated her so well. And that’s how it was with me; they were just wonderful. The patient coordinator understood that I needed to have a clear time frame so I’d know when I could go back to work, and she helped me plan everything down to the wire. I chose their CareCredit plan, so I pay as much or as little as I want to each month and for 18 months there’s no interest. I’ll pay it off before then because, even though I’m not rich, we’re financially comfortable. My husband’s retired and I felt fortunate that I could afford cosmetic surgery. I got the chance I wanted to feel good about my body again.

My recovery from breast augmentation

The procedure went fine and even though I was given a prescription for pain pills, I only ended up taking 3 of them. I wore the bra they gave me for a month, night and day – and just took it off to shower. I expected a lot of discomfort, but there was very little. I was just bored being home for a month! Like I said, I like to be out and about. I did go out to dinner once in awhile and to the casino, but couldn’t lift or do anything strenuous during that time. But I got treated so well. Dr. Pancholi has a great office and a great staff. They took all the time in the world with me. It’s hard to find a doctor whose personality you like…who you can talk openly to. I can be myself with Dr. Pancholi.

I brought a friend of mine in who wanted to get some work done and Dr. Pancholi looked carefully and told her maybe all she needed was to get on a good skin care regimen. They were having a Latisse Special the day we went in – buy one and get the second one at half price – so I bought it for me and for my friend. Dr. Pancholi even took the time to explain how to use the Latisse. He said he wouldn’t let us buy it without allowing him to explain how to use it. And I asked him about slight bags under my eyes and wondered if I should get cosmetic surgery for that. He said not to do anything. He could have…and I would have considered it. A lot of doctors see dollars and they go for it but not Dr. Pancholi. He’s honest; he tells it like it is.

I told Dr. Pancholi, “If I strike it rich, my body is yours!”

How has this surgery changed my life? It made me want to get a tummy tuck done! But, seriously, I went up one cup size, which I like. I still fit into all my old clothing. My breasts don’t really look bigger; they’re just fuller. The people who know I had a breast augmentation think I look great. And my husband loves them (laughing)! And you know what? They do look great! I’m not afraid of considering another cosmetic surgery procedure now that I’ve been through the experience and I really am considering a tummy tuck. I told Dr. Pancholi, “If I strike it rich, my body is yours!”

Heidi Montag had 10 cosmetic surgery procedures in 1 day.

(1) Mini Browlift, (2) Revision Rhinoplasty, (3) Chin Reduction, (4) Otoplasty (ear pinning), (5) Liposuction of her Neck, (6) Liposuction of her Waist, (7) Liposuction of her Hips, (8) Liposuction of her Inner and Outer Thighs, (9) Buttock Augmentation, and (10) Revision Breast Augmentation.

She also had Botox to forehead and frown lines along with fat injections to her face. A massive amount of attention has been paid to Heidi’s obsession/addiction to cosmetic surgery. With all these surgeries being performed it’s understandable.

But where is the outrage towards the board certified plastic surgeon that performed this?

Here, the patient-plastic surgeon relationship was analogous to a child-parent relationship. Heidi asked for an extraordinary amount of work to be done at one time. And her surgeon agreed! She had surgery performed throughout her head, chest, and legs. Each spot on the body that surgery is performed, results in a stress to the body. It is standard of care to limit what’s performed at one time to limit this stress.

With so many areas treated at one time, the risks rise and we start to see flashbacks of other celebrity – plastic surgery nightmares such as Donda West.

Today, Heidi talked about getting too much Demerol to help control the pain. Her breathing rate slowed down, and luckily, the security guard noticed and called the nurse! It is amazing to me, when safety is the utmost priority, that this board certified plastic surgeon, who did extra training in breast surgery, burn surgery, and aesthetic surgery, did not have the insight to say no.

Safe surgery, results, and accountability – its more than just a board certificate.

“I wanted to wear a bikini on my honeymoon.”

I’m a 24-year-old graphic designer, living with my mom in Las Vegas. Dr. Pancholi did my breast augmentation with silicone gel implants six months ago, and I’m so happy I did it. This is an important time for me because I’m engaged and in the midst of planning my wedding. You might wonder why I chose this specific time in life to get a breast augmentation, and the answer is simple: I wanted to wear a bikini on my honeymoon, and couldn’t get the idea out of my mind. The thought of not feeling good about my body when I would be going off on the most romantic trip of my life made me realize that I needed to do something about it. So I did.

I’ve always been self-conscious about my breasts and wasn’t even large enough to need a bra. I wore one because I wanted to, but never felt feminine. My small breasts were out of proportion to the rest of me, and nothing I tried with clothing or exercise could correct the imbalance. I’m physically active – quite athletic, actually – and I’ve been working out and going to the beach with my friends for many years. I walk, do spin classes, body pump and take Pilates classes but those activities won’t give you bigger breasts, right?!

I didn’t really tell anyone I was going to have a breast augmentation except my mom (who was very happy with her own breast augmentation) and my fiancé, who said he loved me just the way I was and that I didn’t need it. But I wanted it for me. It’s funny because, after I had it done and was back out on the beach with my friends, they were saying, “There’s something different about your body but I can’t put my finger on it.” So I’ve been telling them, “I got boobs!” and they say, “Oh yeah, you did!” My breasts look so natural that even people who know me don’t get it at first. As for my fiancé…well, now that I have new boobs, he loves them! And I love them, too!

“I did my homework and Dr. Pancholi’s name kept coming up.”

I’ve wanted to have a breast augmentation for years, and I had saved up the money for it, so I did my homework online, learning about my options. I zeroed in on Board Certification sites and sites for doctors in my local area. Dr. Pancholi’s name kept surfacing so I decided he’d be one of the doctors I’d consult with. I’d already gone to the doctor out in California who did my mom’s breasts. My plan was to talk to at least five doctors, and it ended up being six. I’d never had cosmetic surgery before, so it was a big deal to me.

My consult at Dr. Pancholi’s office was wonderful. I didn’t feel like a number. There were two other women in the waiting room when I came in for my consult and they both had breast augmentations done. They showed me the finished product (laughing) and we carried on like women do. They looked beautiful! It was a wonderful beginning.

Dr. Pancholi discussed my likes and dislikes and I made him laugh! He showed me tons of photos and talked to me about different implant shapes: narrow, wider, and high profile. I was fully clothed and he sat across from me. Then he told me he was going to choose a size for me to try and that I could tell him honestly what I thought. He said, “I’m not going to tell you the size, just try them first and then we can discuss the size you choose and why.”

Dr. Pancholi wanted me to have implants that fit my height and proportion so he could give me the balance I needed. He spent a lot of time with me, and made me feel so comfortable.

I couldn’t decide on the size so I went back to the office several times and they were so accommodating and didn’t make me feel bad about taking the time I needed. The other consults I went to weren’t good for me. I was sent into rooms by myself to try on different implants and the doctors didn’t sit down with me. Dr. Pancholi gave me his time and all the time I needed. There was no pressure and the staff didn’t rush me. I’ve gotten to know him and his staff – even bring them in baked goods! It’s just been a great experience.

I remember everything about my recovery, drinking a lot of water afterward and going home to sleep and rest. I slept on my back propped up and wore the bra they gave me to keep my breasts in place. I was just so happy to be able to need a bra! I missed working out, but it was worth it and I had a concern about scarring, but the scar treatment they gave me works great. You have to be patient and let your body heal. For instance, it took about three months, but now my breasts feel and look so much better to me.

Dr. Pancholi and his staff really showed me that they care about me personally. In the end, the proof is in the way I look and feel. I look so much better in my clothing and feel great about my body. It doesn’t get better than that!

My Advice to other women wanting breast augmentation

Check out at least three doctors online and see that they do natural-looking work. Visit several offices and if you get rushed through your consultation – or if a doctor sends you into a room by yourself to try on implants – walk right out and go see Dr. Pancholi! He’ll talk you through the process and give you the time to ask all your questions. If the doctor doesn’t sit down with you, they don’t care. That office visit is the most important part of making your decision because you need to know your doctor is looking out for your overall well-being. Your implants need to be the right size and fit for your body and you have a right to ask all your questions and not be made to feel bad about it.

I’m excited about the future and – yes – I’ve got that bikini ready for my honeymoon. I feel so happy with my body now. I love my new boobs!

The authors, surgeons from the University of Texas, described this ideal substance as follows:

Readily available in large quantities

Resists infection

Resists absorption

Completely integrated into host tissues

Causes little patient morbidity

Based on their research, one promising substance appears to be rib cartilage taken from human donors. Analysis of long-term rhinoplasty results revealed that patients who used these grafts experienced a low complication rate. Moreover, 94.2 percent of the 357 patients said they were satisfied with the results.

Other common options for surgical rhinoplasty include cartilage from the septum or ear. Non-surgical options such as Radiesse have also been growing in popularity as some patients choose to forego a surgical operation.
